Our History
and Team
Hall's Arrow Indoor Archery Range, located right off I-84 in Manchester, Connecticut, is one of New England's largest and best-stocked archery ranges and pro shops, offering automatic and walk-up shooting ranges, the DART virtual hunting experience, and a large, fully stocked pro shop with all of the latest and greatest in bows (hunting and target, compound and recurve), crossbows and archery accessories. Hall's Arrow is also proud to offer tournaments, target and DART leagues for adults and young people, bowhunter education courses, and one of the largest Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) programs in the United States!

Art Hall, whose love of archery began when he was an archery instructor as a young man, started Hall's Arrow in 1954 in a quest to be able to make arrows and sell them to many of his archery friends who wanted them. In the years that followed, Art fine-tuned his arrow making skills and his shooting abilities, and established himself as a top arrow maker and tournament archer. By 1964 Art realized archery would have to go indoors and become a year-round sport. He responded by opening the first indoor archery range in New England, which turned out to be the largest of its kind in the country at that time, and to this day the only one in New England to offer automatic target returns.

Today, Hall's Arrow is one of the region's premier archery ranges, with a reputation for providing excellent customer service and an unparalleled knowledge of archery. Although Art has retired from the day-to-day operation of Hall's Arrow, his teaching technique is passed on personally to each staff member, continuing the tradition of allowing each and every new archer to be successful. Our team is led by Richard Johnson III and two-time Olympic medalist Richard "Butch" Johnson.

General Manager Richard Johnson III, who is Butch's son, brings to the team great organization and a natural attention to detail. Richard coordinates the many aspects of our business that keep us prepared and able to meet our customers' needs without interruption. In addition to being one of the nicest people you will ever meet, Richard keeps our office running with accuracy and precision and accomplishes the impossible on a daily basis.

Manager of our Equipment Sales and Pro Shop is Butch Johnson, who is a true Archery Legend, reportedly winning more National Titles than any other archer in the United States as well as being an accomplished and avid bowhunter. Butch has been a member of the last five Olympic Archery Teams and won a Gold Medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games, as well as a Bronze Medal in Australia at the 2000 Olympic Games. Butch has also been sharing his knowledge and expertise with Hall's Arrow Customers for the past seventeen years. In addition to selling and fine-tuning bows, Butch continues to coach Olympic hopefuls at the range. Michael Costello, Teresa Iaconi, Ben Whittemore and Thomas Thibodeau round out the range's sales and instruction team, providing customer service, technical expertise and instruction to the many archers who call Hall's Arrow their home range.

Hall's Arrow is proud to cater to archers of all disciplines, offering one of the region's best-stocked archery pro shops, with bows ranging from hunting and target compound bows, to target and traditional recurves, as well as longbows and crossbows.  We are proud to offer compound bows by Hoyt, Mathews and Bowtech, as well as from PSE, Diamond, Mission, Martin, Parker and Alpine. We also stock target recurve bows for archers of all levels, including beginner bows from Samick and Mohegan, all the way to top-end target recurves by Hoyt, Samick and KAP, and huge selection of accessories to outfit any compound or recurve setup.  Finally, for the traditional archer, we offer recurves and longbows by Martin, Howatt, Samick, Bearpaw, Ragim and hunting recurves from Hoyt. The compliment we hear most often from customers, however, is not just about the quality of the equipment we offer, but more so the quality of the service they receive here, with some of the nation's best compound and recurve bow technicians right here in Manchester, Connecticut.

The Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program at Hall's Arrow is one of the largest in the United States, with over 150 archers per week participating in hour-long classes with one or two instructors in small classroom settings. As part of JOAD, students are offered instruction based on their individual needs, from beginner-level courses, to intermediate, to advanced instruction. Many of our students are competitive archers, and we are proud to have coached our students to numerous state, regional and national finishes.

Leagues and Tournaments are offered throughout the indoor and hunting seasons at Hall's Arrow. We are pleased to offer our famous "Hall's Arrow Warm-Up Tournaments" on the first Sunday of each month, November - March, which offer archers a chance to come in and test their skills against some of the best archers in New England each month during indoor season. We are also proud to be home to the New England Archery Open, held in March each year, which is New England's oldest continually-running archery tournament. Finally, we are home to the JOAD State Championships, to be held on April 11 - 12th this year (registration still open)!  Target leagues are available for young people on Friday nights, and for adults each Tuesday night, and DART virtual hunting leagues are offered, open to both adults and young shooters - a great family activity!

All of us at Hall's Arrow want to thank you for continuing to support our family-owned business for the past 55 years, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
